ScotBio is an exciting biotech company based in Scotland producing ScotBio Blue™, a healthy, all-natural blue food colourant.
ScotBio Blue™ comes from the blue pigment in spirulina algae. Unlike other producers we grow our spirulina algae inside in our custom growing facility rather than outside in open pond systems. Our patent-pending production method causes the spirulina to turn more blue. That makes it easier for us to extract an all-natural high purity product.
ScotBio Blue™ is suitable for use in:
- Candies / sweets
- Ice cream
- Healthy waters
- Sports drinks
- Blue cocktails
- Gin, vodka, rum, tequila
The ScotBio Blue™ Story
The greatest discoveries are frequently made by accident.
ScotBio Blue™ is no exception. In 2010, against all reason, Chelsea Brain, a PhD student sponsored by Scottish Bioenergy, decided to try an experiment with our spirulina using special red lights. This led to a novel breakthrough, increasing the production of phycocyanin, the blue pigment in spirulina, and the rest is history.
Our spirulina algae has point of source traceability, so you know exactly what you are getting:
A healthy, all-natural blue colourant
Consumers worldwide are increasingly conscious of what’s in their food and the health risks artificial ingredients may pose. They are demanding natural ingredients. And companies are listening. Major global brands are making the switch to natural ingredients.
Finding natural replacements for yellows and reds is easy. But finding natural blue? One comes from spirulina algae, with its blue pigment known as phycocyanin. FDA approved since 2013, it’s a flexible blue colourant chosen by many global brands.
And even better, it’s good for you too. Phycocyanin is a powerful anti-oxidant and natural anti-inflammatory, making it desirable for use in healthy waters and juices.
